How I Got to Level 20 in Destiny

Without Going to Venus

So I hit the level cap in Destiny after thirteen hours of gameplay and I never made it to Venus. I always meant to go there, but other things got in the way – mostly in the Cosmodrome. There were gold chests to find and missing ghosts and loot chests to discover and the chance to give that level 18 Hallowed Knight hiding in the dark exactly what he deserved. What can I say? I was busy in Old Mother Russia.

That’s not to say that I didn’t go to the Moon. I’ve been there, I did the missions. I have the right to go to Venus. It’s just that I like the seashore, the waving grasses, and there are still many places I have yet to know well. I mean, it was only yesterday that I visited The Grottos, and what a site that was! Level 20 Dregs? They actually exist? What’s going on past these rotting ships? While other people have moaned and groaned about “I hit level 20, what do I do now?” I haven’t even done a patrol mission on the Moon, let alone seen Mars.

What Have I Been Doing Down There?

I suppose the only way my level has gone up at all is that I love public events, I loot caved for a little more than an hour, I tried a level 18 Vanguard strike at level 16 (and failed with a fellow 16 and 17) and I do a lot of bounties and missions. It’s what you do while you explore. Of course, patrols don’t pay anything so I’m always scrambling for glimmer, but I can whack a couple of hallowed chaps every now and then to pay the bills. I hate PvP so I seldom spend much time in The Crucible (two completed games and counting – that first bounty to do five is still sitting in my inventory). Besides, I still have a few more ghosts to dig up during the Earth strike mission!

Where Am I Going?

When I find the last missing Earth ghost I suppose I’ll go do some patrols on the Moon, but I’m not looking forward to it. It’s such a grey and inhospitable place. No beautiful rust patinas there, no atmospheric sunsets, and the Hive are ugly. I never thought of Destiny locations as vacation spots, but if every world looked like the Moon, it certainly wouldn’t be much fun. As a friend says: “The moon is dark, and I’m afraid of the dark.” What’s he going to do when the first Hive-based DLC comes out?

Maybe I’ll save the Moon exploration for my other character and just move on to Venus. At least the Vex are shiny and don’t howl at you quite so greedily. Plus, they tell me there’s green vegetation up there! Guess I’ll have to check it out after all and do some more exploring!
